Elixir of my Life

Blogging took a backseat as I prepped to take care of lot of things (who doesn’t want to be a superwoman these days?). But being a good mom, as I made sure baby is well fed, not cranky or unwell and always happy, other things took a backseat.
Since leaving my job is no option at all, so being a working mom is even tougher. Clocking hours in office and then going to an innocent eager face waiting for me is bliss. Life in nutshell for me is- family, career and leisure. I make sure to do justice to these aspects of life, rest everything else falls into place.
Yeah against the notion of some people who want to live alone, scroll Facebook, enjoy late night parties, some random bs and travel the world. Seriously I am at a stage of life where for me everything mentioned above is just wastage of life but travelling. You may never be content, may still have a hole in your heart, may not feel secure and may still long for love if you are alone.
Having said that- Love is a powerful tool. Every lingering soul wants to share life. Such is the power of love that those who hesitate to have kids eventually end up loving their kids the most. Family matters a lot, take pride in new family, your spouse and the kids you made. Live for them, sacrifice sleep to nurture a new life rather than getting drunk and wasting your life.

Anyways, all said and done, love is elixir of life. Fall in love, get married, have kids and live life on your terms 60% (please do focus on career and be independent) but do bend 40% as you surely need someone in life to grow old with.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum Depression(PPD) is real. For any female who thinks logically all the time, post baby life can be miserable and it takes months to overcome depression. Insomnia, expectations, obesity and new responsibility leaves a woman confused and helpless. The new life of no sleep and thousands of orthodox views and opinions on how to handle a baby takes a toll on emotional and physical health. The highly aggravated hormones give into depression eventually.
Lamenting over how one can avoid being distressed, finally I jot down helpful pointers below.
I request any pregnant women or new mothers to go thru below ways prudently to avoid PPD. Well, heads up it’s a very long post.

Message inside a Changing Room
Have a Healthy Pregnancy:
The number one reason for depression post pregnancy is excess weight. Most of the women are depressed and loss their confidence because of drastic changes in the body.
First step is to choose food smartly during pregnancy itself. Avoid junk food and consume green leafy vegetables, lots of dal, milk and everything good for health. Cut down sugar and salt as much as you can. Keep a check on cravings and indulge rarely.
Cut down junk
If you don’t put-on much, you won’t regret. But if you have put on a lot and it’s causing depression, be patient and give time, a lot of time. You will be back to shape.

Diet Post Pregnancy:
Again post pregnancy everyone bombards you with what to eat or what not to.
No need to have hot water in hot weather just because some advised.
Kindly use your mind and do not avoid specific food until doctor recommends.
Choose your palate wisely post pregnancy, you need healthy food and not fatty foods. Dry fruits, jaggery and certain other condiments are for your good health, but do not make this your staple food.
Also do eat healthy if you want good skin, hair and health. You definitely don’t want hair fall problem later.
Refer ‘Post Pregnancy Diet’ for healthy diet post pregnancy. This helps to boost breastmilk while keeping weight in check.

Listen to everyone but question when in doubt:
If you think you are bugged with weird advice throughout your pregnancy, well don’t be alarmed as post pregnancy it only gets worse. Whatever you do might be wrong according to elders or any experienced friend. Lots of advice will pour in teaching how to handle a baby. Listen to everyone but do only what your common sense tells you. You are a mature human and a mother now. In doubt confirm with a paediatrician first.

Family Support and New Life:
As if insomnia, unhealed stitches and body, new responsibility and advices are not enough, some irrational husbands or in-laws cause more pain to new mothers. Hence instead of healing soon, the emotional mother ends up with disrupted process of recovery.
My husband and whole family is very sensible, supportive and caring, so I didn’t face this problem but I have seen instances where there is drift between couples because some senseless husbands do not take care of their wife and new baby..
How to avoid such situation? Stay with your parents for delivery and sometime after that.

Breastmilk and Food:
Ok so as soon as baby is born, everyone pesters the new mom to feed only breastmilk. Though the benefits are endless but don’t be gloomy and sad if you can’t feed your baby. Ignore what others say and do what doctors recommend.

Coming back to food, certain food items do boost the flow but still no scientific evidence for same. Nevertheless new moms just eat everything advised by elders to have good supply.

Eat it all :)
Well I didn’t have anything specific to increase the supply and my baby was exclusively on breastmilk till 6months, yes no water or formula, only bm. Even now there is excess supply and yes to deny all myths, I do have ice-creams, fruit juices, cauliflower, curd, Chinese food, coffee and everything in moderation. No food causes gas or any problem to baby and it doesn’t affect breastmilk supply.
Read importance of breastmilk and how to increase breastmilk at How to increase breastmilk.

The 40 days confinement period:
There is a reason you should take rest for 40 days. Your stitches and body needs to heal. It takes a lot more time in reality, 40 days are nothing. The less you go out, the less chances of infection. Try bonding with baby, build dreams for new life ahead, learn to be selfless and try to be positive. Always remember ‘This too shall pass’.

Tackle Myths:
There are lots of myths like you can’t drink cold water else baby will catch cold or wear socks or cover ears even when you are drenched in sweat.
Just be smart enough to say ‘No’ to certain myths and forced food habits and anything that can harm your baby (like using hot water for bay bath, massaging private parts, taking out witch milk from baby’s nipples, cleaning baby’s tongue, nose, ears and applying milk/bread/flour uptan to make baby fair, all these are a complete no-no).
You are a grownup sensible human, don’t hurt anyone but also don’t agree to bullshit. As I always say use your motherly instinct, common sense and learn to say ‘No’. You cannot be happy pleasing everyone.

Constant Comparison:
You will always find people comparing kids. There will be sarcasm and indirectly comparison. What should you do? Ignore. Just ignore when they comment on how thin, inactive or small your baby looks. Ignore when they site example of what they did to their babies and ignore any unwanted advice.

Same applies to you, don’t compare what other moms are doing, how they look and how you look, trust me everyone has some or other problem. Best thing to do in life is to relax, have good food at home and enjoy every moment with your baby.
Yes you will wake up a lot, will get no time for yourself, will have to listen everything from everyone, but you brought a new life to earth so chuck everything and do what actually is right ! You will find inner peace.

You are not alone. Every female faces PPD. Kindly talk to someone you are very close to, to get rid of it. Talking is the best therapy.
Live. Love. Laugh.

Chambor Dazzle Eye Liner Pencil - 107 Blue Review

Smitten by the Chambor bug, I grabbed another eye pencil from stores but this time it’s from Dazzle series namely 'Chambor Dazzle Eye Liner Pencil - 107 Blue'. To provide a fair comparison between Chambor Dazzle and Chambor OROSA, I have picked one in blue colour again.

 Ups:
  • Rich indigo colour in matte.
  • Smudge proof and water proof.
  • Opthalmologically tested.

Downs:
  •      One way twist mechanism
  •      Difficult application on waterline
  •      High Price: Rs.645

My verdict:

The one way twist mechanism is confusing as one can twist it other side by mistake. The matte effect made it bit dry and it doesn’t glide smoothly on eyes when compared to OROSA. At least two strokes are required to prominently highlight the eyes and I observed it isn’t easy to apply on waterline.

Now on the brighter side, the colour is vibrant indigo blue with long lasting effect. In fact the longevity is more than that of OROSA series and this DAZZLE series eyeliner  is also waterproof and smudge proof.

If looking for different beautiful colours and long lasting effect do go for Chambor Dazzle series. I might buy one in black or green as I really liked the lasting effect.

Complete Skin Care Routine for Instant Glow

After getting pegged by many women for my post pregnancy skin care routine, I have decided to provide a complete guide that helped me to keep my skin soft and supple. Do read till end and check disclaimer ☺

To start off let me introduce my skin type: My face has been a battling ground ever since puberty hit its peak. It has been acne prone, very sensitive ultimately providing me with a combination skin. My T-zone is oily but rest of the face very dry. So over years of slaying the quality of my skin by using every skin product available in market, finally I have found my comfort in below products that made my skin’s quality is way better than what it was before. Some products act as God to your skin. I do not any skin problem anymore but the battles do leave scars, don’t’ they?

So without ranting anymore I would jump to the why, how and what products I use currently:

Cleanser:
Usually I wash my face with a facewash (Cetaphil is best) but twice to thrice a week I use cleanser as well which imparts extra glow. Basically it unclogs pores and removes any dirt or makeup left on the facial skin. Face wash does the same and in fact cleans skin more properly but leaves it a bit dry.

Products:
Cetaphil lotion facewash should be used as per your skin type.
For cleanser, invest in natural or herbal ones like Ayur, VLCC or Lotus. Currently I have been using VLCC cleansing milk for ‘normal to dry skin’.

How to apply:
Wash your hands. Take cleanser in generous amount in your palm. Apply to your face in circular motion, massaging gently the forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. Do it for 3-5 minutes and wipe it off with cotton and then wash your face once with just water.

Result:
The skin feels soft, supple and has added sheen on cheeks.

Toner:
Usually once your pores are open after cleansing, the toner is meant to close the cleaned pores and tighten your skin. Well this is what science of beauty says but since my skin is sensitive I always end up having burning sensation and overly dry skin. Hence I limit use of toner or just quickly clean within seconds. You can be a better judge of your skin and how long to use the toner.

Products:
Any rose water toner works best. Currently I use VLCC Rose Water toner.

How to apply:
Take toner on cotton and dab over your face very quickly but gently. I usually do it for 5 to 10 seconds as if I keep it longer it burns my skin. There are days when my regime sans toner. L

Result:
The skin feels tight and fresh.

Moisturiser:
This is the ultimate step of all times. Every makeup bag is incomplete without a moisturizer. Choosing the right one can change a lot about your skin.

Products:
Since I have a combination skin on my face - oily t-zone, super dry cheeks and sensitive overall, the products that work best for me are ‘Clean&Clear  Oil Free Moisturiser’ and the ‘The Body Shop Vitamin C Glow Boosting Moisturiser’. The Body Shop Moisturiser is very costly but it imparts glow to my skin.Vitamin C is a good skin food.

How to apply:
I use two moisturisers for best results. First I use the Clean&Clear Moisturiser  as it is very light and effective, then after 10 seconds or so I use the Vitamin C moisturizer that adds a perfect glow to my skin.
Put 1 or 2 spots of moisturiser on each area – forehead, nose and chin and a little more on cheeks. Massage gently with clean hands for a minute or so.

Result:
Dull and dirty face transforms into clean, soft and radiant.

DISCLAMER:
The above skin care regime is completely based on writer’s perspective and may not be suitable to others. Kindly test every product before using it. Kindly check ingredients of products before purchasing.

The writer is not responsible for any damage to any other skin type.

3 Simple Tips To Increase Milk Supply in Lactating Mother

Breastfeeding is direly necessary for good health of a mother and her baby. Babies should be fed only breast milk for the first six months as it builds strong immunity for fighting diseases apart from providing nutrients and minerals. Even a very small quantity of breast milk is enough to boost strength and keep a baby healthy.

Well there are endless benefits of breast milk which you can refer from links below, as for now please do check below tried and tested tips to increase your milk supply.

  • Drink lots of fluid which includes 4 to 5 litres of water, lots of milk and fruit juices daily.
  • Ensure to have dry fruits, fenugreek leaves/seeds, oats, dalia, cumin seeds, fennel seeds in your diet. Please check post pregnancy diet post as I have mentioned diet that increases breast milk along with helping you to keep your weight in check.
  • Latch your baby and let him/her suck the milk as early as possible. Sucking process releases hormones that stimulate production of milk in mammary glands. The more they suck the more milk you have.
Take adequate sleep and avoid stressful situations for overall well being. Many women take tablets to increase milk. Not sure how much it helps but above tips do not fail to increase supply!

Chambor OROSA Blue Defining 10H Eyeliner Pencil Review

Writing product reviews has always been in my subconscious mind and reviewing an eye pencil seemed like perfect option to start with. After my stint with eyeliners for ages, I believe  eye pencils work best as an eyeliner for generic use ( as liquid liners look best for glam functions).
My fetish for blue eyeliner brought me to a busy mall on a sunny day. With endless brands to choose from, I stumbled on the Chambor counter in Pantaloons to try out my luck. I do have a penchant for Chambor lipsticks but took a leap of faith for the eye product here. Ended up buying Chambor OROSA ‘Defining 10H Eyeliner Pencil’ in Blue colour.

Ups:
  • Two way easy twist up eyeliner.
  • Rich striking navy blue colour.
  • Smudge free and doesn’t smear or fade.
  • Waterproof and can be used on waterline.
  • Dermatologically and Opthalmologically tested.

Downs:
  • High Price: Rs.745

My Verdict:

I liked the packaging which is handy has a twist-up plastic body pencil with cap and is very easy to carry. The liner after application stayed on not only for a day but until next day when I slept without removing it off.  It didn't irritate my eyes and is totally waterproof. Single stroke is enough but two or more will highlight the upper eyes, lower eyes and also the waterline prominently. Although the price is little on a higher end but the long lasting smudge-free effect gives an edge to it.

Under low light

Under Fluorescent light

Soon will also review blue eyeliner from Chambor Dazzle Range which is bit cheaper than OROSA. But I do recommend buying this but will definitely grab other options from the OROSA range. After all a new mom with sleepless nights and puffy eyes needs good eye make-up products in her bag ☺

Pregnancy Myth Busters

Numerous pregnancy myths still prevail in India turning the beautiful and careful nine months into a bewildered and dreadful phase of life. Every morsel of food intake and each breath inhaled is judged upon and thousands of  irrational guidelines pour in from everywhere. To have a peaceful pregnancy, experts recommended that every pregnant woman should stay logical, positive, happy and should only follow the doctor's advice. Chuck down  the myths and enjoy the pregnancy phase.

Difficult to pen down all myths but the most common ones are listed below:

Myth#1: Consuming ghee (clarified butter) aids in normal delivery
Fact: Had it been the case, ghee would have surpassed gold's price. Ghee doesn't help to smooth uterus lining. Ghee is purely fat. A teaspoon of ghee per day if ever consumed is more than enough. Also, there is no scientific proof that ghee helps to ease pain of joints. Many pregnant ladies who consume ghee still have backache and joint pains. So please use ghee sparingly in your food. Excess ghee will only cause discomfort, difficult labour and obesity. From my experience, I never had ghee but still had normal delivery with just two hours of intense labour pain.[1]

Myth#2: Avoid cheese
Fact: When the raging pregnancy hormones demand a slice of pizza but the mind stays in dilemma as pizza has the cheese topping, well good news, one can have pizza and definitely cheese. In fact, if it suits the digestive system, one can have cheddar and cottage cheese(paneer) as these considered good source of protein.

Only soft cheese, blue cheese and goat’s cheese are harmful as they have listeria bacteria which can cause miscarriage. So for cheese lovers, do not experiment new ones during pregnancy. [2]

Myth#3: Do not eat non-vegetarian food
Fact: Non-vegetarian food is very good source of protein.
One can definitely have eggs, chicken, mutton and fish (with exception of few fishes and seafood). Everything should be freshly prepared and should not be contaminated or stale as stomach becomes very sensitive during pregnancy for some.

Myth#4: Avoid panipuris, chat and other outside food
Fact: Definitely avoid food from filthy roadside stalls.  Messing with digestive system during pregnancy may have harmful effect on baby. Always advisable to prepare at home.Buy the puri/golgappe pack and prepare everything at home. There are readily available panipuri masala and panipuri packs by haldiram.

Myth#5: No Pineapple and Raw Papayas:
Fact: I never had papaya or pineapple during pregnancy.
Pineapple: It has Bromelain, a type of proteolytic enzyme that helps to soften the cervix which eases the labour. Well I had pineapple and pineapple juice in large quantity in nineth month to induce labour and I was in labour after few days. So maybe true.
Raw Papaya: Unripe Papaya is not considered safe as it had latex which triggers uterine contractions and prepares body for delivery.
One can have ripe papaya and pineapple in moderation but I believe it's better to avoid pineapple and papaya for nine months.

Myth#6:Caffeine causes deformation:
Fact: High amount of caffeine can cross placenta and may cause harm to baby. Caffeine can be found in coffee, tea and cold drinks mainly. But a cup of coffee per day should be ok.
Pregnant women should have no more than 200mg of caffeine a day. This is equal to about 2 cups of instant coffee or 4 cups of tea or 5 cans of cola per day. So do make sure you are consuming way less than 200mg caffeine per day.[3]

Myth#7: Stay away from WiFi:
Fact: Many women stay away from WiFi assuming radiations are harmful for foetus. Radiations are everywhere.I did use WiFi and so has many pregnant moms. No study has proved this myth so far. One can try to minimize but completely stopping it makes no sense.

Myth#8: Baby kicks every 2 hours:
Fact: Some babies kick a lot, some rarely kick. Do not panic if your baby doesn't kick a lot. Try and observe the pattern. There can be minor deviation but some movement should always be there like light flutters, hiccups or kicks. For any deviation, the movements can be traced by consuming something cold or sweet and lying down.

Myth#9: Consuming coconut water or saffron milk to have fair babies:
Fact: This myth tops my hate-list. No amount of any food will help you have a fair baby. Only genes decide your baby’s colour. Nothing can change the Mother Nature's will.

There are lots of myths surrounding gender of baby. Will have another blog for it!
Put more myth busters in comments. For now, hope the above pointers puts the mind at ease. Stay Healthy,Stay Happy!

Fair Complexion Obsession in India

The other day as I was scrolling down on an app, one post caught my attention. Someone had posted their baby’s photo and it was bombed with numerous likes and comments, the reason being baby’s skin colour. He looked extremely fair and every pregnant lady expressed their desire to have one. Compliments were followed by questions about mother’s diet.
Yes, such is an obsession for fair complexion in India. One would have coconut water, kesar (saffron)milk, something white for breakfast during pregnancy just to have fair babies and would blindly follow all the myths. Once blessed with healthy baby people still brood over complexion and end up rubbing baby’s sensitive skin with milk ubtan (pack) and other homemade packs. Poor babies! How hard it is to understand one can’t change baby’s complexion by consuming specific food or by applying the homemade packs on baby’s sensitive skin. Get the fact right ladies, skin colour is always genetic, always!

Since when has complexion played a major role in personality development?

No offence but the superstar Hrithik Roshan is not fair like Neil Nitin Mukesh. Also the lead Bollywood babes in tinsel town are blessed with caramel complexion. Are they not epitome of beauty and success?
I don’t want to get more distressed so just ending here with my small poem:

I wish our society accepts everyone the way they are
I wish everyone stays confident with their natural complexion
I wish our future generation do not care about colour, caste or creed
And it’s high time, I wish everyone accepts the notion ‘Beauty is Skin Deep’
