Postpartum Depression

Postpartum Depression(PPD) is real. For any female who thinks logically all the time, post baby life can be miserable and it takes months to overcome depression. Insomnia, expectations, obesity and new responsibility leaves a woman confused and helpless. The new life of no sleep and thousands of orthodox views and opinions on how to handle a baby takes a toll on emotional and physical health. The highly aggravated hormones give into depression eventually.
Lamenting over how one can avoid being distressed, finally I jot down helpful pointers below.
I request any pregnant women or new mothers to go thru below ways prudently to avoid PPD. Well, heads up it’s a very long post.

Message inside a Changing Room
Have a Healthy Pregnancy:
The number one reason for depression post pregnancy is excess weight. Most of the women are depressed and loss their confidence because of drastic changes in the body.
First step is to choose food smartly during pregnancy itself. Avoid junk food and consume green leafy vegetables, lots of dal, milk and everything good for health. Cut down sugar and salt as much as you can. Keep a check on cravings and indulge rarely.
Cut down junk
If you don’t put-on much, you won’t regret. But if you have put on a lot and it’s causing depression, be patient and give time, a lot of time. You will be back to shape.

Diet Post Pregnancy:
Again post pregnancy everyone bombards you with what to eat or what not to.
No need to have hot water in hot weather just because some advised.
Kindly use your mind and do not avoid specific food until doctor recommends.
Choose your palate wisely post pregnancy, you need healthy food and not fatty foods. Dry fruits, jaggery and certain other condiments are for your good health, but do not make this your staple food.
Also do eat healthy if you want good skin, hair and health. You definitely don’t want hair fall problem later.
Refer ‘Post Pregnancy Diet’ for healthy diet post pregnancy. This helps to boost breastmilk while keeping weight in check.

Listen to everyone but question when in doubt:
If you think you are bugged with weird advice throughout your pregnancy, well don’t be alarmed as post pregnancy it only gets worse. Whatever you do might be wrong according to elders or any experienced friend. Lots of advice will pour in teaching how to handle a baby. Listen to everyone but do only what your common sense tells you. You are a mature human and a mother now. In doubt confirm with a paediatrician first.

Family Support and New Life:
As if insomnia, unhealed stitches and body, new responsibility and advices are not enough, some irrational husbands or in-laws cause more pain to new mothers. Hence instead of healing soon, the emotional mother ends up with disrupted process of recovery.
My husband and whole family is very sensible, supportive and caring, so I didn’t face this problem but I have seen instances where there is drift between couples because some senseless husbands do not take care of their wife and new baby..
How to avoid such situation? Stay with your parents for delivery and sometime after that.

Breastmilk and Food:
Ok so as soon as baby is born, everyone pesters the new mom to feed only breastmilk. Though the benefits are endless but don’t be gloomy and sad if you can’t feed your baby. Ignore what others say and do what doctors recommend.

Coming back to food, certain food items do boost the flow but still no scientific evidence for same. Nevertheless new moms just eat everything advised by elders to have good supply.

Eat it all :)
Well I didn’t have anything specific to increase the supply and my baby was exclusively on breastmilk till 6months, yes no water or formula, only bm. Even now there is excess supply and yes to deny all myths, I do have ice-creams, fruit juices, cauliflower, curd, Chinese food, coffee and everything in moderation. No food causes gas or any problem to baby and it doesn’t affect breastmilk supply.
Read importance of breastmilk and how to increase breastmilk at How to increase breastmilk.

The 40 days confinement period:
There is a reason you should take rest for 40 days. Your stitches and body needs to heal. It takes a lot more time in reality, 40 days are nothing. The less you go out, the less chances of infection. Try bonding with baby, build dreams for new life ahead, learn to be selfless and try to be positive. Always remember ‘This too shall pass’.

Tackle Myths:
There are lots of myths like you can’t drink cold water else baby will catch cold or wear socks or cover ears even when you are drenched in sweat.
Just be smart enough to say ‘No’ to certain myths and forced food habits and anything that can harm your baby (like using hot water for bay bath, massaging private parts, taking out witch milk from baby’s nipples, cleaning baby’s tongue, nose, ears and applying milk/bread/flour uptan to make baby fair, all these are a complete no-no).
You are a grownup sensible human, don’t hurt anyone but also don’t agree to bullshit. As I always say use your motherly instinct, common sense and learn to say ‘No’. You cannot be happy pleasing everyone.

Constant Comparison:
You will always find people comparing kids. There will be sarcasm and indirectly comparison. What should you do? Ignore. Just ignore when they comment on how thin, inactive or small your baby looks. Ignore when they site example of what they did to their babies and ignore any unwanted advice.

Same applies to you, don’t compare what other moms are doing, how they look and how you look, trust me everyone has some or other problem. Best thing to do in life is to relax, have good food at home and enjoy every moment with your baby.
Yes you will wake up a lot, will get no time for yourself, will have to listen everything from everyone, but you brought a new life to earth so chuck everything and do what actually is right ! You will find inner peace.

You are not alone. Every female faces PPD. Kindly talk to someone you are very close to, to get rid of it. Talking is the best therapy.
Live. Love. Laugh.

Chambor Dazzle Eye Liner Pencil - 107 Blue Review

Smitten by the Chambor bug, I grabbed another eye pencil from stores but this time it’s from Dazzle series namely 'Chambor Dazzle Eye Liner Pencil - 107 Blue'. To provide a fair comparison between Chambor Dazzle and Chambor OROSA, I have picked one in blue colour again.

 Ups:
  • Rich indigo colour in matte.
  • Smudge proof and water proof.
  • Opthalmologically tested.

Downs:
  •      One way twist mechanism
  •      Difficult application on waterline
  •      High Price: Rs.645

My verdict:

The one way twist mechanism is confusing as one can twist it other side by mistake. The matte effect made it bit dry and it doesn’t glide smoothly on eyes when compared to OROSA. At least two strokes are required to prominently highlight the eyes and I observed it isn’t easy to apply on waterline.

Now on the brighter side, the colour is vibrant indigo blue with long lasting effect. In fact the longevity is more than that of OROSA series and this DAZZLE series eyeliner  is also waterproof and smudge proof.

If looking for different beautiful colours and long lasting effect do go for Chambor Dazzle series. I might buy one in black or green as I really liked the lasting effect.

Cheese Corn Fritters with Piri Piri Seasoning

Ruminating the days my husband and I used to drive through hilly slopes of Lonavala just to have tea and corn pakodas/fritters whilst soothing our eyes with sunset view, I being a major foodie instantly want those fritters here in Kolkata.

Since the recipe is super easy, I rush to hunt down the ingredients. I have added here Readymade ‘Keya Piri Piri Seasoning’ to add a twist to the recipe.

One important thing to remember is to always boil the corn kernels first. Usually I take sweet corn kernels and microwave it on high for 3 to 5 minutes. The corn kernels may pop while frying and can be dangerous, hence boiling part is mandatory.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

250 gm Besan (Gram flour)
250 gm Boiled Sweet Corn
4 Grated Cheese Cubes
1 Finely Chopped Onion
2 Tablespoon Piri Piri Seasoning (optional)
1 Tablespoon Red Chili Powder
1 or 2 Green Chilies
1/2 Cup Water (where 1cup =250ml)
Salt for seasoning
Oil for frying

Method:
  • In a bowl mix all ingredients very well (gram flour, grated cheese, onion, spices, salt and water).

  • Heat oil in a frying pan. Once the oil is hot, add the small balls and deep fry on sim for 3 minutes or till golden brown.

  • Remove these on a tissue paper. Fry rest of the batch.

Sprinkle some more Piri Piri and serve with your favourite chutney. It’s an easy and perfect evening snack to be enjoyed with your cup of tea or cup of coffee in my case.

Cheese,Corn and Piri Piri!

Complete Skin Care Routine for Instant Glow

After getting pegged by many women for my post pregnancy skin care routine, I have decided to provide a complete guide that helped me to keep my skin soft and supple. Do read till end and check disclaimer

To start off let me introduce my skin type: My face has been a battling ground ever since puberty hit its peak. It has been acne prone, very sensitive ultimately providing me with a combination skin. My T-zone is oily but rest of the face very dry. So over years of slaying the quality of my skin by using every skin product available in market, finally I have found my comfort in below products that made my skin’s quality is way better than what it was before. Some products act as God to your skin. I do not any skin problem anymore but the battles do leave scars, don’t’ they?

So without ranting anymore I would jump to the why, how and what products I use currently:

Cleanser:
Usually I wash my face with a facewash (Cetaphil is best) but twice to thrice a week I use cleanser as well which imparts extra glow. Basically it unclogs pores and removes any dirt or makeup left on the facial skin. Face wash does the same and in fact cleans skin more properly but leaves it a bit dry.

Products:
Cetaphil lotion facewash should be used as per your skin type.
For cleanser, invest in natural or herbal ones like Ayur, VLCC or Lotus. Currently I have been using VLCC cleansing milk for ‘normal to dry skin’.

How to apply:
Wash your hands. Take cleanser in generous amount in your palm. Apply to your face in circular motion, massaging gently the forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. Do it for 3-5 minutes and wipe it off with cotton and then wash your face once with just water.

Result:
The skin feels soft, supple and has added sheen on cheeks.

Toner:
Usually once your pores are open after cleansing, the toner is meant to close the cleaned pores and tighten your skin. Well this is what science of beauty says but since my skin is sensitive I always end up having burning sensation and overly dry skin. Hence I limit use of toner or just quickly clean within seconds. You can be a better judge of your skin and how long to use the toner.

Products:
Any rose water toner works best. Currently I use VLCC Rose Water toner.

How to apply:
Take toner on cotton and dab over your face very quickly but gently. I usually do it for 5 to 10 seconds as if I keep it longer it burns my skin. There are days when my regime sans toner. L

Result:
The skin feels tight and fresh.

Moisturiser:
This is the ultimate step of all times. Every makeup bag is incomplete without a moisturizer. Choosing the right one can change a lot about your skin.

Products:
Since I have a combination skin on my face - oily t-zone, super dry cheeks and sensitive overall, the products that work best for me are ‘Clean&Clear  Oil Free Moisturiser’ and the ‘The Body Shop Vitamin C Glow Boosting Moisturiser’. The Body Shop Moisturiser is very costly but it imparts glow to my skin.Vitamin C is a good skin food.

How to apply:
I use two moisturisers for best results. First I use the Clean&Clear Moisturiser  as it is very light and effective, then after 10 seconds or so I use the Vitamin C moisturizer that adds a perfect glow to my skin.
Put 1 or 2 spots of moisturiser on each area – forehead, nose and chin and a little more on cheeks. Massage gently with clean hands for a minute or so.

Result:
Dull and dirty face transforms into clean, soft and radiant.

DISCLAMER:
The above skin care regime is completely based on writer’s perspective and may not be suitable to others. Kindly test every product before using it. Kindly check ingredients of products before purchasing.

The writer is not responsible for any damage to any other skin type.

Recipe for Lemon Cheesecake in OTG (Oven,Toaster,Griller) and in Microwave

Baking in convection mode of microwave is easy as compared to that in OTG (Oven, Toaster, Griller) but OTG baked products are tastier without a doubt.
So here I sit staring at my OTG (a gift from my first company) and pondering over the cheesy lemony delicious aroma of Lemon Cheese Cake that my sister first made. Without a second thought I pace to grab all ingredients and move to execute my plan before my baby wakes up.

If you are using an oven, just preheat to 160 Degree Celsius and bake the cheesecake for 30 to 40 minutes or till fully baked. A general practice of baking is to always keep a hawk’s eye and check upper layer of cake shouldn’t get burned.
Since we are baking in OTG, remember to sniff as during first 10 minutes the cake will have a crusty sugary aroma that will change later to little sour cheesy lemony whiff indicating the cake is getting baked properly.
Also do keep turning the tin with tongs after every 10 minutes else the cake will burn on one side and as I mentioned always keep an eye on the cake to avoid any burn. If you see the black colour taking over the upper crust, change the timing accordingly for OTG. I have provided below recipe that worked best for me.

Now to begin with, I have used homemade paneer/cottage cheese which took around 15 minutes in all. Always use homemade paneer for this cheesecake.

Paneer made from 1litre milk

Preparation Time:  30 mins (15 mins for paneer+ 15 mins for rest of things)
Baking Time: 30-35 mins

Ingredients:
 For Base:
8-10 Marie Gold or any Digestive Biscuits
25 gm Butter
½ Grated Lemon Zest

For Filling:
25 gm Butter
200 gm fresh homemade paneer (cottage cheese)
100 gm Castor Sugar
3 Eggs
3 Cheese Cubes
100 gm Curd
½ Grated Lemon Zest
1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice

Method:
For Base:
  •  Spread little butter or use butter paper in the baking tin.
  •  Crush biscuits, melt butter in oven and mix crushed biscuits with melted butter and lemon zest.
  • Standard 6x6 inches tin

  •  Take ¾ of this mixture and put it in a baking tin. Press down firmly and keep it aside.

For Filling:
  • Beat together butter, paneer, cheese and curd.

  • Beat in above mixture the eggs, lemon zest and lemon juice form a smooth consistency. I used grinder to mix everything. Add sugar in the end and blend again.

  • Pour this thick mixture to the biscuit base in tin.
  • Sprinkle rest of the biscuit crumble at top.

  • Preheat OTG for 5 minutes by turning the heat for both top and bottom mode. Now place the tin inside and keep both modes on for another 5 minutes. Now turn off the top side heat and bake only on bottom side heat for 10 minutes. Now turn on top side heat and turn off bottom heat for next 5 minutes. Again bake only on bottom for next 5 minutes. Last 5 minutes on both sides.

So in a nutshell:
Preheat 5minutes
Both – 5 minutes
Bottom – 10 minutes
Top – 5 minutes
Bottom – 5 minutes
Both - 5 minutes
Ideally the cheesecake should be fluffy and ready by now. If not then bake for 5 to 10 minutes more.
  • Allow to cool tin.
  • Take the cheesecake out and chill for 2 hours in fridge.
  • It is ready to be served.

Devour the lemon cheesecake with lovely crust on outside! Perfect for tea time snack or after dinner dessert!

3 Simple Tips To Increase Milk Supply in Lactating Mother

Breastfeeding is direly necessary for good health of a mother and her baby. Babies should be fed only breast milk for the first six months as it builds strong immunity for fighting diseases apart from providing nutrients and minerals. Even a very small quantity of breast milk is enough to boost strength and keep a baby healthy.

Well there are endless benefits of breast milk which you can refer from links below, as for now please do check below tried and tested tips to increase your milk supply.

  • Drink lots of fluid which includes 4 to 5 litres of water, lots of milk and fruit juices daily.
  • Ensure to have dry fruits, fenugreek leaves/seeds, oats, dalia, cumin seeds, fennel seeds in your diet. Please check post pregnancy diet post as I have mentioned diet that increases breast milk along with helping you to keep your weight in check.
  • Latch your baby and let him/her suck the milk as early as possible. Sucking process releases hormones that stimulate production of milk in mammary glands. The more they suck the more milk you have.
Take adequate sleep and avoid stressful situations for overall well being. Many women take tablets to increase milk. Not sure how much it helps but above tips do not fail to increase supply!
